Junk shot/explosion 8am ET (video updated)

Captured from the live cam around 8am ET:

Truly captivating....and destined to be hardly seen by anyone (let's change that). Someone needs to explain what's going on here.

The camera begins to move around the 2:20 mark, and then pans dramatically upwards...of what exactly follows nobody seems to be very certain. Eventually the camera just sits focusing on nothing but the dark, thick water (if it can still be called that) for approximately 45 minutes. Which seems odd. Update: See CNN's independent cam highlights (and this post) for what may have really been going on as BP's cam goes dormant, some kind of frantic dismantling...

The New York Times details the true halting, depressing truth about the "top kill" operation's majority failure thus far (thanks to several anonymous insiders).

This series of videos comes from a one hour+ live feed section I captured from this morning, afraid the entire 'event' would be ignored. I broke them into 10 minute sections, converted and posted to you-tube:

There are more on you-tube (and I have more screen grabs from the better quality live feed–prior conversion–if anyone is interested) or would like a copy...

"First".

Otherwise very nice.

Hm, doesn't really look like an explosion; looks like the ROV just backed away from the riser into the debris cloud overhead.

It looked very much like an explosion to me, C. Right before the camera is jerked away the volume noticeably increases, and there are a number of spasms, and then the entire world is filled with debris and dark clouds of oil.

Especially remarkable if you compare the relative calm and clear before and the complete swirling shitstorm and screen flashes, after. More higher quality video coming in a moment...

Use VLC and transcode the video to H.264.

It's space-efficient and at 128kbps won't degrade the video feed.

Thanks for the tip.

If it was 25,000 barrels a day before we are in the x00,000 range now...

Looks like a failure to me. Well they have all lied from the beginning so why would we now expect them to tell the truth. Does anyone really believe that Obama is the environmentally friendly president? Well maybe after a good round of golf and another vacation he'll provide some real leadership instead of these rehearsed theatrics.

Obama took 2 million in bribes from BP but he has the audacity to accuse Bush of being to cozy? This guy is a liar and a fraud. Obama is a s dirty as Bush and Cheney or more so- if that is possible. And BP and Goldman Sachs are invested in the company that makes this Corexit crap that they are polluting the oceans with. It is four times more toxic than oil.

Obama says he is in charge and responsible and he is running the show. OK.... we got it. We'll prosecute you along with BP, Transocean and Haliburton.

Well the guy from Oil Drum now seems to think it was some kind of explosion type thing(not just the ROV stirring up muck).

In fact, he is suggesting there were several. A result of the junk shot materials coming out of the holes, if I understand what he's saying.
